The Hamsa is a palm-shaped icon popular throughout the Middle East and North Africa commonly depicted with an eye symbol used as protection against the evil eye. Hamsa means five in Arabic (and Hamesh in Hebrew), as in “the five fingers of the hand for divine protection”. The open right palm is an image that has been used as a sign of protection throughout history predominantly by the Abrahamic religions.
